Most AI desk noise is not wrong information. It is information with nowhere to go. A digest that lists twelve things. A watch that says “still quiet.” A routine that fires so you know it is alive.
If you cannot act in the next few minutes, that ping is not help. It is a second inbox.
The tip
Require every wake, digest line, and standing alert to end with a decision or a clear “nothing to do.” Prefer silence when there is nothing to decide.
Before you save a routine or approve a watch, ask:
- What decision does this create for me?
- Can I answer yes, no, pick A/B, or “revise” in under two minutes?
- If the answer is “none,” should this stay quiet instead of pinging?
Status without a decision belongs in a log file or a dashboard you open on purpose. It does not belong in your morning interrupt path.
What a good wake looks like
- “Draft tip is ready. Publish as-is, revise, or kill?”
- “Three cold replies landed. Prioritize which one to answer first?”
- “Invoice failed to send. Retry now, or pause fulfillment?”
- “Nothing in the queue needs you. Staying quiet.”
The last line is a valid result. Teach the desk that “no news” does not need a toast.
What to strip out
- Alive-checks (“routine ran successfully”)
- Raw dumps with no ask
- Overnight noise that cannot be answered until morning anyway
- Duplicates of a progress file you already trust
If you keep a progress tracker (one markdown file, one sheet, one board), update that on finish or skip. Chat is for the decision, not the archive.
Paste-ready rule
Decision-or-quiet rule:
1) Every wake must end with a clear ask (yes/no, pick, revise) or "nothing to do."
2) If there is nothing to decide, stay quiet. Do not send filler status.
3) Put ongoing progress in one tracker file; update it on finish or skip.
4) Digests list only items that need a human choice today.
5) Alive-checks and "still quiet" pings are bugs, not features.
Your desk stays useful when it protects your attention the same way it protects your credits: spend both on work that moves.
